People obsess about different things, I obsess with scents. When I walk into my house I look forward to the smell of a Glade plugin greeting me at the door. And after I take a shower, I love to dry off with a towel that is Downy fresh. When I finally lay down for bed, I love to snuggle up with powder fresh sheets(yes i sprinkle baby powder on my sheets). Needless to say, we wash alot of linen and clothes in this household. So when my mother told me she had made her own laundry detergent, I was sold. Growing up in an age where everything is all about convenience and store bought, it never once crossed my mind. Just thinking of all the money I would be saving it did not take long for me to say “good bye” to Gain/Tide.
I’m now on my 2nd batch and I love it! Its super easy to make, cheap, and my clothes come out squeaky clean. There are a couple of cons: the water does not create suds like it does with Gain or Tide detergent, and the scent does not last as long.
Here is how I made my homemade detergent. All the items can be found on the laundry isle of the grocery store.
Ingredients:
1 box of Borax
1 box of Washing Soda
1 container of Oxy Clean
3 bars of Fels-Naptha laundry soap(grated)
2 bottle of Unstoppables
Tip: Purchase a cheese grater from the Dollar Tree.
I lined a bucket with a garbage bag and mix all ingredients together. Thats IT!!!! Its that simple. Now just place the detergent in a closed container. I purchased these 2 containers from Walmart, they were about $10 each.
I have to admit that I was skeptical at first. I found all the ingredients in Wal-Mart. It was easy to make. And I LOVE IT!! It cleans my clothes well and last a long time using 1-2 tbsp per load. Good bye store bought laundry powder. I am a DIY Laundry Queen now!! Thanks Shanna!!
